Salt Lake City makes it easy to recycle glass

China Glass NetworkSALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Salt Lake City is making it easier for you to recycle your old glass.  The city is putting 21 bins around town, where people can drop off their clear or brown bottles.  Leaders say that means there's a bin within a mile of every home in the city.

You'll recognize them by their blue bottoms and yellow tops.  The goal is to recycle more than six million pounds of glass each year in the city.  That's glass that would normally pile up in the landfill.  "The largest percentage of weight of garbage is glass.  And, glass goes into the landfill.  It never deteriorates," says Richard Leonard with Glass and Yard Waste Recycling.

Local companies will be grinding up the glass and making home insulation out of it.

The city is also dropping off brown yard waste bins at every residence.  These can be used for grass, tree branches, vegetable scraps... even Christmas trees.

If people use these recycle bins, 10,000 tons of yard waste will be turned into compost every year.
