From this week, Samsung’s display business will focus heavily on “China” and “Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED).”
Samsung Electronics will soon hold the ground breaking ceremony and the completion ceremony of its LCD factories in China and Korea, respectively. Its strategy is to become a major player in the display market by rooting out all the “LCD crisis” rumors and taking over the next-generation market.
Samsung Electronics’ LCD department is doing its best to enter the Chinese market. It has prepared itself to take over the world’s largest LCD TV market by investing US$3 billion and constructing a LCD fab as the first foreign company in China. The Chinese LCD TV market has been expanded more than twofold only in 2 years, helping China outpace the US and become the world’s biggest LCD market.
Samsung is going to invest a whopping 4.5 trillion won in its AMOLED business this year in order to outclass its rivals as well as expand the market. The Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) is planning to increase the 5.5 generation AMOLED production sevenfold this year from its current production amount of 3 million 3-inch AMOLEDs.
