Berkshire Community College will offer a new stained glass course this summer. All sessions will be held at the college's main campus. The course, "Introduction to Stained Glass" (WKS 1552 E1), will guide students in learning how to fabricate a simple stained glass panel in the copper foil technique. Receive instruction in layouts/patterns, glass cutting, copper foiling and soldering. The emphasis of the class will be on developing a working knowledge of the steps involved in stained glass fabrication as opposed to stained glass design. The instructor will supply a selection of designs that students will choose from to complete their project. Classes are held Wednesdays, June 22 through July 20, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Instructor Glenn Shalan began his career in stained glass in 1982. He studied art and design at Parsons School of Design in New York City and has worked at several well-known stained glass studios in the United States. He has collaborated with architects, designers and other stained glass professionals on a wide variety of projects. In July 2006, he opened Shalan Stained Glass, located in the Windsor Mill in North Adams. Registration costs $125 and should be completed no later than one week before the course starts. There is an additional $50 materials fee payable to instructor at the first class.
