The Korean electronics company LG wants a 40% share of the three dimensional (3D) television market the Middle East and Africa, and started its offensive with a lavish product launch at Abu Dhabi’s Ferrari World on 7 June.
LG’s Cinema 3D range and monitors are based on the new film patterned retarder (FPR) technology which, the Seoul-based company claims, reduces flickering and crosstalk found in competing shutter-glass 3D technology.
“We believe that our products will be able to offer distinguished, next generation 3D technology to the consumers in the Middle East and Africa, based on which we will target a 40% market share to become the number one manufacturer of 3D televisions,” said Kim Ki-wan, president of LG Electronics Middle East and Africa region.
By 2012, the region’s 3D TV market is forecast to grow to 1.69 million units, up from 730,000 in 2011 – according to market research firm DisplaySearch. By 2013, that figure is projected to rise to 2.74 million and, by 2014, 3.89 million 3D TVs will have found homes in the Middle East and Africa.
LG’s full 3D Cinema product line up - including a selection of 3D TVs, 3D laptops, 3D monitors, 3D projectors, the 3D Blue Ray Home Theatre, and the 3D Blue Ray Player - are now available in the region.
Kim told the Yas Island event audience - which was treated to some Hollywood glamour in the form of actress Megan Fox - that his company’s products are “effectively the most complete televisions available in the market today for TV viewing, gaming, and online connectivity.”
