PORTLAND, Ore. – Firefighters battled a fire at a glass container manufacturing plant Friday after a kettle full of molten glass split and started leaking.
Portland Fire and Rescue responded to the Owens Illinois container manufacturing plant at 9710 NE Glass Plant Road at 9:03 p.m., according to spokesman Paul Corah.
Two of the four kettles used to melt glass for new bottles were in use when one of them split and began oozing molten glass onto the containment floor. Firefighters began spraying water on the kettle and around the kettle when they arrived to cool the molten glass, Corah said.
The kettle contained more than 200 tons of molten glass.
Firefighters called for a 2nd alarm and more resources at 9:51 p.m. They planned to stay through the night to make sure the kettles cool completely.
No one was hurt.
