Glass-blowing students invited to take class with a Pilchuck master

It's an exclusive experience, but if you've got the cash and the resume, you can learn to make a glass goblet with an international master.

Schack Art Center, in partnership with Pilchuck Glass School, is offering a Venetian-style glass goblet workshop with internationally renowned glass artist Dante Marioni.

"Although Dante Marioni is an expert in making Venetian style stemware, it is extremely rare for Dante to teach a workshop focusing on goblets," said John Kiley, Schack's glass director.

Marioni is best known for his freely blown, colorful and tall vessels.

He began studying glass in the mid-1980s at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood. By the late 1980s, he was exhibiting in major galleries and museums across the country, including the American Craft Museum in New York, according to a Schack press release.

Today, Marioni's pieces are on display in major collections and museums throughout the world, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

The Venetian tradition has a strong influence on Marioni's work, though his pieces exhibit a modern style.

Students in the workshop will get to see intensive demonstrations by Marioni, then practice these same techniques with the help of experienced teaching assistants.

The Dante Marioni Goblet Master Class is being offered from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 15 to 18 at Schack, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett. Cost is $1,100 (if accepted). To apply go to
