(China Glass Network) There are a lot of waste glasses in our daily life, and they always threw away as rubbish. But according to a new study in England, the waste glasses can produce a kind of special material which can be used to clean the polluted water.
Scientist Nicola Coleman from Greenwich University reported the results in the latest International Environment and Waste Management Magazine. She said a lot of glasses were thrown away, and only parts of flint glass were recycled, and colored glasses were few.
Ms Coleman said colored glasses including waste glass can be reused. She found that combine the glass with lime and caustic soda in a sealed container and heat up to 100°C, then tobermorite appears. Tobermorite is a kind of material which has a strong adsorptive power to toxic heavy metals, and it is a kind of important material in polluted water processing.
Coleman thinks using the waste glass to process polluted water is a new way to recycle glass. The research is simple but the newness is that no one does it before.
