Glass for the Statue of Liberty renovation project is the largest and heaviest piece ever manufactured by Auburn-based Vetrotech Saint-Gobain.

Auburn-based Vetrotech Saint-Gobain, one of the leading producers of fire resistant glass products tasked with manufacturing glass for the Statue of Liberty, announced it has completed the first stage of the manufacturing process of the landmark's oculus this week and is now shipping it to Vancouver, B.C., for fitting.

Greenlight Glass Systems, a specialist in glass and glazing systems for interior and exterior architectural glazing applications, will do the fitting.

The landmark's oculus is the largest and heaviest circular piece of glass ever manufactured by Vetrotech Saint-Gobain. The company's product, Contraflam, is a clear fire resistant safety glass that satisfies the highest demands of fire protection.

The product will be used for the landmark's floors, doors and stairwells. Once installed in mid-August, it will bring the Statue of Liberty in compliance with safety codes.

The Statue of Liberty is expected to re-open to the public in early September.
