It is important that when replacing your double glazing windows or shower door, you choose the right piece of glass to replace it. It can be baffling to know which glass to choose, but this guide should make it clear.

There are different types of glass, non-tempered and tempered.

For any domestic purpose, tempered glass should be used.

Tempered glass goes through a whole different process compared to non-tempered glass.

Tempered glass is treated. By way of this treatment, the glass will be four or five times stronger than non tempered glass.

With tempered glass, the glass is cut to shape and size before it is treated. This is completed because once it has been treated it cannot be cut because it would shatter.

Once it has been sanded and also shaped into the desired form, it is then heated to almost 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. After this, it is instantly cooled and its famous tempered effect is created.

This glass is very strong and although it has been heated and it appears to look rough, it will still be just as smooth and clear as a slab of non-tempered glass. This can then be installed into your shower, door or window.

Tempered glass is the most popular, because it is both safe and strong as well as reliable and durable.

Experts often say that any glass that has human contact should be tempered including; doors, windows, shower doors, glass table tops etc.

A lot of the time, buying non-tempered glass is almost impossible for domestic use, however it is still important to check when purchasing anything with glass to see if it is tempered.

This is especially the case when it is likely to come into contact with any people or animals.

Most DIY shops will be able to guide you onto the right kind of glass for your specific use. You can tell them your exact requirement and they will be able to come up with the right solution within your budget and time frame.

You should not try and work with untreated glass unless you have been trained and are prepared for breakage. Glass can be very dangerous when shattered and you could hurt yourself on the shards of glass. Let the experts deal with the glass for you – so not to risk injury.
