China Glass NetworkThe 2013 North American Auto Show in Detroit has revealed several new developments in auto glass. Various vehicles have shown innovation directed at both practical and fantasy applications for glass in cars.

Several of the concept cars showcased reveal technology automakers may begin using in upcoming models.

Nissan's new concept car Resonance offering a floating glass roof was unveiled at the show. It features an "open, airy architecture highlighted by a unique 'floating' roof created through the use of the thin, steeply raked A-pillars, large full-length glass panel and flowing D-pillar design. Inside, the designers imagined what the future of first-class space travel might be: Welcoming yet exclusive and high-tech yet premium. The resulting 'VIP lounge,' with its light, buttery leather and premium-stitched seats, exudes genuine sophistication," according to Nissan.

Toyota's Fun-Vii offers an all-glass exterior.

Toyota's all-glass concept Fun-Vii (vehicle, interactive, internet) is also on display. The exterior of the vehicle features interactive glass and has been called a "smartphone on wheels" by the company.

"The ultimate in personalization, the Fun-Vii offers the ability to alter the content displayed on the interior and exterior with the same ease as downloading an application or posting to Instagram. The whole vehicle body can be used as a display space, with the body color and display content changeable at will. This allows the entire vehicle to function as a display for messages or images as you choose," says Toyota.

Though both vehicles were created as display concepts which will are unlikely to ever touch the road, their technology someday may.
