Stained glass a cherished reminder

THE memory of a 109-year-old church in Talgarno will live on when the building is deconsecrated and sold in the near future.

A stained glass window above the altar at St Thomas Anglican Church will be removed and reinstalled in St John’s Anglican Church in Wodonga when the property sells.

The window holds significant meaning to descendants of the late William and Josephine Broome, who donated the glass window.

The couple’s granddaughter, Anne Hayward, was among 60 descendants to converge on Talgarno for a 28-year reunion at the town’s hall over the weekend.

The reunion also involved an emotional service at the church yesterday.

It got a bit teary,” Ms Hayward said.

The church is about to be sold and this may be the last time a service is held at the church.

I grew up in Talgarno and went to the church every Sunday.”

It was very important to the family that the window didn’t get taken out of the diocese,” she said.

Margaret Childs, 92, who is the only daughter still alive of William and Josephine Broome, also attended the reunion.

Mrs Childs taught Sunday school at the Talgarno church and her husband was a minister there.
