New River Community and Technical College is partnering with Tamarack to sponsor classes in the art of glass etching as part of Experience West Virginia.

Four Etched Glass Make and Take classes will be offered at Tamarack July 15 at 9 a.m. 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The classes are open to all ages. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $10.

During these one-hour classes, students will create a beautiful etched glass window hanging or Christmas tree ornament. Working with a professional artist, they will create a design on glass. While one hour is enough time to create an etched glass piece to take home, you are welcome to spend as long as you like working on your masterpiece.

The instructor is Doug Coleman, a professional etched glass artist. He has been a full-time artisan for the last 30 years. For many of those years, he lived in the northern part of West Virginia, but moved to the southern part of the state to be an artist-in-residence at Tamarack, the state arts center, featuring the best of West Virginia. Coleman produces etched glass, demonstrates and teaches on a full-time basis.

Experience West Virginia is an organization dedicated to sharing the culture and beauty of the West Virginia mountains. It is an initiative hosted by the colleges and universities located in southern West Virginia.

For information on other Experience West Virginia classes and programs, or to register for the etched glass class, visit www.experiencewv.org, or call 304-685-0589.
