100th Ton of Glass to be Recycled

Post Time:Aug 26,2013Classify:Industry NewsView:307

Taney County residents, businesses and visitors will soon recycle their 100th ton of glass since glass recycling became available one year ago. To put 100 tons into perspective, it is the equivalent of 400,000 beverage bottles, which, if laid end to end, would reach from Branson Airport to the Springfield Airport.

To celebrate this milestone, representatives from the City of Branson, Taney County Commission, and Ripple Glass will hold a ribbon cutting at the Taney County Transfer Station glass storage bunker, on Monday, August 29th at. 2:00. A display of how the glass is recycled and made into new products will also be available at the ribbon cutting and the public is welcome to attend.

“There is a great demand for glass recycling in the Branson area,” said David Miller, Branson’s City Engineer and Public Works Director.  “This is a very environmentally-minded community and many residents and businesses requested glass recycling.  We now have the capacity to recycle twice this volume of glass.”

Glass recycling is available at four locations in the Tri-Lakes area:

  • United Methodist Church Parking Lot on Hwy 76
  • Branson Recycle Center at 601 Compton Drive
  • Taney County Transfer Station, near Branson High School
  • County Maintenance Building on Hwy 160 in Forsyth

According to Ripple Glass spokeswoman, Donna Utter, “Ripple Glass of Kansas City is proud to be a partner with the City of Branson and Taney County.  This makes Branson part of a five-state network of glass recycling. The glass brought in through the city’s recycling efforts is made into fiberglass insulation by Owens Corning.  We estimate that over 400 tons of glass is currently being landfilled each year, from the Tri-Lakes area, and now your citizens and businesses will have better options for disposal and recycling.”

Glass recycling is a partnership between the City of Branson, Taney County Commission, Solid Waste Districts M & N,  United Methodist Church and Ripple Glass.  For information and a video about where the glass goes after it leaves Branson, see
