TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Tempe company is bottling up some goodwill, as it recycles used wine bottles, then sells them to raise money for Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Refresh Glass rescues wine bottles from landfills, then transforms them into functional art and sustainable glassware, such as drinking glasses, planters, candles and candle holders.
"We collect wine bottles from local restaurants and bars and hotels in our 10-million bottle rescue mission," says Ray Delmuro of Refresh Glass. "We're trying to take all these bottles and repurpose them into functional products."
Some of the products includes candles, glasses, and even a self-watering planter, which uses 100 percent of the wine bottle.
Each month, Refresh Glass hosts a Refreshing Hour at local hot spots, such as Postino and Beckett's Table, to raise money for Phoenix Children's Hospital. Refresh Glass sells and raffles its sustainable glassware at each Refreshing Hour. with all proceeds going to PCH.
"The Refreshing Hour is a series of monthly happy hours that benefits PCH," explains Patricia Barney of Phoenix Children's Hospital. "Ten dollars gets you into the happy hour, and 100 percent of those proceeds go to Phoenix Children's Hospital, and benefits programs like our Family Care Cart, patient bills, and innovative technology at the hospital."
So far the program has raised $4,300 for the hospital.
