The Glass and Glass Product Manufacturing industry in Australia services two key markets: the glass container market and the flat-glass market (including fabricated glass products). The domestic market is expected to total $3.2 billion in 2013-14, with imports capturing about 18.7% of the market and export earnings contributing 3.0% of industry revenue. The industry is projected to generate revenue of $2.7 billion in 2013-14, representing modest growth by 1.9% over 2013-14, stemming from the upswing in housing construction and particularly new apartment developments. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Anthony Kelly, “demand from wine and beer bottling is expected to remain subdued during 2013-14, reflecting the sluggish pace of general economic growth and household spending.”

Over the five years through 2013-14, industry revenue is projected to decline at an annualised 3.6%. “This corresponds with the deterioration of demand for flat-glass products in the housing and commercial building markets and reduced production of bottles for alcoholic beverages due to the high Australian dollar and weaker household spending on alcohol,” says Kelly. The industry is moderately concentrated, with four major players – Owens-Illinois (Australia) Pty Limited, Amcor Ltd, SMR Automotive Australia Pty Limited and CSR Limited.

Industry employment is projected to total 5,200 people in 795 establishments in 2013-14. Employment has steadily trended downwards since the late 2000s due to improvements in productive efficiencies and some plant rationalisation, notably in the automotive glass and wired glass segments. Over the next five years, the improved demand for flat-glass products in the housing and commercial building markets coupled with a return to normal household spending on alcohol, is projected to support a stronger performance by both sides of the Glass and Glass Product Manufacturing industry.
