Apogee Enterprises profit surges on building boom

Apogee Enterprises Inc.'s fiscal first-quarter earnings surged as the industrial glass manufacturer continues to benefit from a recovery in the U.S. commercial construction market.     

The commercial glass provider has returned to profitability in recent quarters, recovering from a string of losses as anemic construction hurt sales. The company has lately seen stronger bidding activity and improving margins on new orders. In the latest quarter, the bottom line benefited, as expected, from strong architectural glass pricing and mix, as well as stronger installation margins thanks to more complex, private projects.
