In spring 2013, Saint-Gobain Verallia in Essen had their entire control system for the batch plant, silo feeding and cullet return modernized.
The big task thereby was to change all the programmable control systems (SPS) from Siemens Simatic S5 to S7 during full operation of two furnaces and while a third was being commissioned.
Control systems from other manufacturers have been partially replaced by Zippe control systems. The sequence programs have been equipped with the newest program modules which allow a comfortable plant operation in cooperation with the new SCADA system.
Apart from the automation technique, also the weighing electronics have been exchanged, in order to ensure the utmost plant availability for the next years.
The modernization represented the completion of a row of retrofits at SG Verallia. The following plants have been technically upgraded by ZIPPE during the past years: Neuburg (2003/2009), Bad Wurzach Werk 1 (2010), Wirges (2010), Bad Wurzach Werk 2 (2011), Essen (2013).
