Niles nails safety double

The Niles value added plant in Michigan has clinched a major safety double.  

Only a few months after reaching the milestone of two million man hours worked without a lost time incident, the plant has added the achievement of two million man hours without a significant injury.

Niles, which employs around 300 people, attributes its success to the use of PRISM safety tools, which is a management tool used to focus on key safety related programs and involve as many employees as possible. "Individual responsibility is important and we credit our success to a high level of employee involvement in the safety process," said Plant Manager Peter Carpenter.

"We are proud of the conscientious effort of everyone in the plant to work dependably and safely."

Employee feedback has also been used to measure the current safety environment and identify where it needs to go next.

"The plant headcount has doubled in the last three years, which certainly has made it challenging to maintain safety performance," said EH&S Group Leader Eric Quinn, who joined the plant in 2006.

"In order to meet our safety goals, the orientation process has changed over the years to focus on behavior and personal responsibility."

The plant celebrated the first milestone in March and again in July to mark its second achievement.
