Wilhelmsburg landmark Office for Urban Development and Environment, Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg

Ecological, close to nature and cost-saving: on Hamburg's Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg, the International Building Exhibition 2013 is showing how we will live in the future.       

Landmark of the IBA is the new building built by Sprinkenhof AG for the Office of Urban Development and Environment (BSU). An optical eye-catcher , the building designed by Sauerbruch Hutton impresses, above all, with its excellent energy balance. For this purpose, more than 7,000 m² of glass from Flachglaswerk Radeburg GmbH - a company in the Saint Gobain GLASSOLUTIONS group - was used.

The largest and most colourful building project of the IBA 2013 already catches the eye from afar: the main tower of the curved new building rises to a height of 54 metres. Like waves, two five-storied wings extend from it which, in turn, are subdivided into seven "houses". In the black façade, colourfully patterned bands consisting of a total of 26,000 glazed ceramic panels in 20 different colours are integrated: they lend the building the typical patchwork look created by the architects Sauerbruch Hutton.
