Guardian Glass Featured in Award-Winning Federal Center South Building in Seattle

The Committee on the Environment (COTE) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently named the new Federal Center South Building 1202 in Seattle as one of its 2013 Top Ten Green Projects. The building features Guardian Industries’ SunGuard SuperNeutral 62 in its curtainwall system.

Designed by ZGFArchitects, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Building uses one-fifth the amount of energy used by a standard office building, according to a release from Guardian.

The design of the curtainwall permits natural light penetration at levels that allow the building’s lights to be off during daylight hours 61 percent of the time.

Additionally, a ceramic frit ranging from 60 to 80 percent coverage was used in the clerestory and skylight units to control glare and heat gain. To meet the project’s blast and safety requirements, the inboard lite of all the insulating glass units was laminated, according to Guardian.

The glass was fabricated by Guardian Select Fabricator Northwestern Industries. The glazier on the project was Walters and Wolf.
