DEC orders partial shutdown at Hillcrest Industries

ATTICA — Citing insufficient progress, the state Department of Environmental Conservation has ordered Hillcrest Industries Inc. to shut down part of its operations.

“The DEC’s inspections of Hillcrest’s production processes revealed deficiencies in the facility’s air pollution control equipment,” said agency spokeswoman Megan Gollwitzer in an e-mailed response.

“The company was directed by DEC to correct the deficiencies and make operational changes to reduce particulate emissions,” she continued. “Additional recent inspections by DEC have revealed that Hillcrest has made insufficient progress in this area, and we have informed the company that they should not operate their grit dryers, grit grinders or glass bead furnaces until they have fully addressed the air pollution control equipment deficiencies and we have inspected the work.
