A recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that construction employment decreased in 33 states from March 2013 to April 2013. The largest decrease was seen in Vermont, where those employed in construction dropped from 14,300 to 13,400—a decrease of 6.3 percent.
Additionally, Illinois saw a decrease in construction-related employment from 185,400 to 177,500—a 4.3-percent drop. Other states showing sizable decreases included Utah, with a 4.1-percent drop from 74,800 to 71,700; Wisconsin, with a 4.1 percent decrease from 95,800 to 91,900; Iowa, with a 3.9-percent drop from 64,600 to 62,100; and Nebraska with a 3.7-percent fall from 43,500 to 41,900.
The report also saw a few notable increases, including Connecticut, where those in construction-related employment rose from 53,500 to 55,600, a rise of 3.9 percent; Florida, with a 2.6-percent gain from 345,100 to 354,100; and Alabama, with an increase of 2.3 percent from 77,200 to 79,000.
