Universal Design
straightforward – safe – sustainable

On 24 and 25 May 2012 the door industry and its suppliers will meet for the 7th time at Rosenheim. The motto for the event is “Universal Design: straightforward – safe – sustainable”. Well-known speakers will elaborate on the concept behind this term, covering issues such as future-proof construction, energy conservation and freedom from barriers. In addition the conference will focus on recent developments in the product standard for internal doors, fire doors and shutters, and on the new Construction Products Regulation and their implication for manufacturers.

Universal Design – is it a passing fad or something the door industry needs to take seriously in the future? The term refers to a concept that includes a number of different principles, with the aim of developing products, simply and sustainably, for the largest possible group of people. What does this mean for pedestrian and industrial doors? At the Rosenheim Door Conference we will explore this subject and illustrate its consequences for product design.

Demographic change and modern lifestyles mean that houses, rooms and components need to be easier to use and more adaptable. The trends of sustainability, environment friendliness and future-proof construction all place demands on the industry – whether in the form of legislation and standards, fitness for use or product certification requirements. Applying the principles of Universal Design can make a significant additional contribution to the economic and social sustainability of environments, products and services.

This year’s event will therefore feature speakers from a range of disciplines: universal designer Prof. Fritz Frenkler (universal design e.V.), well-known architect and planner Stefan Behnisch (Behnisch Architekten), futurologist Dr. Eike Wenzel (Institut für Trend- und Zukunftsforschung) and Dr. Bernhard Schneider, Head of Department at the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS). Prof. Christian Niemöller will be informing delegates about the latest developments in European consumer protection and the Construction Products Regulation. In addition, the following issues will be addressed as part of the six main sessions: barrier-free construction, the prEN 14351-2 product standard for internal doors, retrofitting drive mechanisms for industrial and pedestrian doors, fire doors and shutters, verification of environmental compliance, pollution emissions from pedestrian doors, and external doors as an opportunity for energy conservation.

An interesting addition to the technical lecture programme is the participation in an obstacle course in an age simulation suit. This gives delegates the opportunity to emotionally engage with barrier-free issues and the insecurity of restricted movement. Lastly there will be an opportunity for a personal exchange of experience with the ift experts in the ift laboratories. The programme will be rounded off by an evening with modern Bavarian entertainment on the first day of the conference, where there will be plenty of time for informal networking. More than 300 delegates are expected at the event, which will have a European focus.
