In a recent report issued Aug. 21, the U.S. Energy Information Administration stated that the industrial sector, which includes glass manufacturing, accounted for nearly a third of total U.S. energy use in 2012, with glass manufacturing "among the most energy-intensive industries." The EIA concluded that there is potential for energy efficiency improvements in glass manufacturing.
Improvement estimates range from 20 percent to 25 percent, mainly focused on the extremely energy-intensive melting and refining process, predominantly run with natural gas, which dominates overall fuel use in the United States.
