At approximately 3 a.m on Tuesday, Jan. 29, a leak from a glass furnace was reported at PPG’s Carlisle, Pa., flat glass plant. Molten glass leaked from the furnace into the plant’s basement area.
The PPG emergency response team worked to contain the leak, and they called the local fire department to assist. The leak was stopped and contained, and the incident is under investigation, according to PPG officials.Contrary to some initial reports, there was no fire associated with this incident. No injuries were reported, and PPG does not anticipate any environmental issues or production interruption.
PPG's Carlisle plant manufactures flat glass for use in solar, residential and commercial construction markets under the Starphire, Solarphire and Solarban glass brands. The plant currently employs about 400 people.
