Vetrotech Saint-Gobain officials announced the company has completed the first stage of the manufacturing process for the Statue of Liberty's oculus and is now shipping it to Vancouver for fitting by Greenlight Glass Systems, a specialist in glass and glazing systems for interior and exterior architectural glazing applications. The landmark’s oculus is the largest and heaviest circular piece of glass ever manufactured by Vetrotech Saint-Gobain, according to a company release.
Vetrotech Saint-Gobain's Contraflam-- a clear, fire-resistant safety glass--will be used for the Statue of Liberty's floors, doors and stairwells. Once installed in mid-August, it will bring the landmark in compliance with safety codes, according to company officials. The Statue of Liberty is expected to re-open to the public in early September.
