Austria’s Minister of Technology Doris Bures presented the State Prize2012 "Clean Technology Austria" award to Karl Gruber, CEO of the Lisec Group, and Leopold Mader, head of research and development for the machinery supplier. Lisec was awarded the first prize in "Research & Innovation" for its thin glass technology, according to a June 1 release.
The tempering technology ensures greater mechanical stability and increased flexibility of thin glass in particular, according to the release. When used in insulating glass, it can also significantly reduce the weight of triple units. Lisec officials report the new technology almost halves energy consumption during the manufacture and transport of panels from 25 kWh/m2 (4 mm glass) to 14.2 kWh/m2 (2 mm glass, tempering process included).
