Major glass removal begins at W Austin Hotel after spontaneous breakages

Crews are removing almost 1,000 panes of balcony glass from the W Austin Hotel and Residences following several instances of spontaneous breakage, according to a June 29 article in the Austin American-Statesman. The first instance of breakage at the 37-story hotel occurred June 10, when two glass panes crashed to the W's pool area, injuring four people. Three additional panels fell June 27, and another three June 28, prompting closure of the hotel and nearby streets, according to the article. No one was injured in the latter two breakage instances.

The developer, Stratus, is investigating the breakages, and will wait until the cause is determined before replacing the glass, according to the article.
