Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Inc.'s fourth-quarter earnings jumped due tohigher sales to a range of businesses, from aerospace to commercial construction, according to a Jan. 10 report in The Washington Post. Revenue rose 4 percent to $5.65 billion from $5.43 billion a year ago. The company reported net income of $258 million, or 24 cents a share, for the October-December quarter, compared with a net loss of $277 million, or 28 cents a share in the same period of 2009. Company executives expect business to continue to improve, and forecast a 12 percent increase in global aluminum demand this year.
