Arange of Kawneer architectural aluminum products contribute to the “green” campus of the newly constructed $625 million Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, according to a May 12 Alcoa release. The facility incorporates Kawneer products that maximize daylighting and thermal performance, including curtain wall, sunshades and thermally broken windows and doors.
Kawneer’s curtain wall envelopes much of the vibrant colorful palette of the hospital’s exterior and adds both light and drama to the four-story atrium that extends to the rooftop healing garden. Kawneer windows, overhead glazing, and curtain wall systems promote healthy, natural light. Studies show natural light speeds up the body’s healing process and promotes health. In each of the nine floors of the hospital, fixed and operable windows make the space lighter and brighter, contributing to an enhanced therapeutic environment. In addition, throughout the facility, Kawneer thermal entrances and framing systems help improve energy performance while Kawneer’s 1600 SunShade product helps to reduce solar heat gain.
“Kawneer’s energy efficient aluminum products and systems help to strengthen the link between the quality of the environment and a healthier outcome," said Andy Zubal, Kawneer territory sales manager, in the release. "The sustainable design of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will benefit the patients, the parents, and the community for years to come.”
