Nonfarm payroll employment fell for the sixth straight month in June, by 62,000 jobs, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on July 3. Construction spending fell 0.4 percent in May, seasonally adjusted, and 6.0 percent from May 2007, the Census Bureau reported on July 1. Private residential fell 27 percent YTD and 20 percent in 2007; private nonresidential rose 20 percent in both periods; and public spending climbed 7.4 percent and 12 percent, according to an article in the July 7 edition of The Data Digest.
