Architects in glass houses

38 St Alouarn Place, Margaret River W.A.
$5.8 million

West Australian architect Richard Szklarz was more daring than usual when he designed this cantilevered glass box residence, which is literally and figuratively one of the edgiest houses in the Capes region.

The reverse-T design has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a games room and a study connected to the earth along a horizontal strip while the open-plan kitchen, living space and deck are thrust outwards above Leeuwin Ridge. There are views from every room.

There are marble floors throughout and bespoke local timbers were used for the cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms and the decking. Automatic louvers form an operable skin to control the sunlight and provide privacy to an otherwise transparent viewing platform.

The land is two hectares of prime river frontage, with views to the ocean and across the Margaret River, and parking for six cars.
