Glass show features wares of all types

It comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. It can be for everyday use, or even decoration.

 

Glassware is something many people own, and often collect.

 

It will be the focus of a show at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center this weekend.

 

The Hubbard Ballroom will become wall-to-wall glass.

 

The Michigan Depression Glass Society is hosting the two-day event where glass lovers from around the country will come to find new pieces to add to their collections.

 

Glassmaking was huge in the U.S. and now its kind of gone away,” said Dearborn resident Jennifer Ganem, a member of the Michigan Depression Glass Society.

 

A variety of glassware will be available, especially “Depression Glass.”

 

It is often referred to as "Depression Glass" because much of the colorful glassware was being produced throughout the Great Depression,” Ganem said.

 

When the Depression hit, a lot of companies were left with a lot of glassware that wouldn’t sell, Ganem said. So, the manufacturers would sell it off to companies who would give it away to customers with a purchase.

 

It was a feel good type of giveaway,” Ganem said. Continued...
