CORNING, N.Y., November 03, 2014 – Wendell P. Weeks, chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Corning Incorporated, (NYSE: GLW) was honored today for outstanding contributions to Korea’s display industry and economy. Weeks received the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit from Minister Yoon Sang-jick in a ceremony at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy in Seoul, Korea.

The Gold Tower Industry Order of Industrial Service Merit is the highest award presented by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. Weeks was lauded for Corning’s role in driving Korea’s display-industry leadership through Corning Precision Materials Co., Ltd. Other honorees were Chairman Kato Motomi of Denso Korea Automotive, who received the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Merit; and Choong-Young Ahn, the former ombudsman at the Korea Trade Association, who received the Bronze Tower. Korea created the Order of Industrial Service Medals to recognize individuals and businesses that have contributed to the development of industry, job creation, and economic growth. Since their inception in 1968, most of the honors have gone to Korean individuals and businesses.

I am honored to receive this award and proud of Corning’s contributions to Korea’s display industry,” said Weeks. “Corning’s strategy of partnering with global innovators and locating facilities in important markets has been critical to our success. And nowhere is that more evident than our investment in Korea. Corning has been developing new technologies and creating new industries for more than 160 years, and we are proud to use our inventive capacity to contribute to Korea’s Creative Economy.”

Corning has had a business presence in Korea for 41 years, since forming its first joint venture with Samsung in 1973 to manufacture cathode ray tube (CRT) glass for black and white televisions. The success of the Samsung-Corning joint venture led to further collaboration, including the creation of Samsung Corning Precision Materials Co., Ltd. (SCP) in 1995. Earlier this year, Corning acquired full ownership of SCP (now known as Corning Precision Materials), which produces precision flat glass based on Corning’s proprietary fusion manufacturing process. The facility has been first to market with significant liquid-crystal display glass innovations and helped customers like Samsung and LG Electronics become global leaders in the consumer electronics industry. Corning recently expanded production of its fusion glass products in Korea to include its industry-leading Corning® Gorilla® Glass.
