Corning Named 2015 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Yea

Post Time:Apr 07,2015Classify:Company NewsView:407

CORNING, N.Y., April 6, 2015 - Corning Incorporated (GLW) has been named an ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the second straight year.

The ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year is the EPA`s most prestigious award and recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions in energy management and raised awareness about energy efficiency.

"Corning Incorporated is a leading example of how businesses and organizations are incorporating ENERGY STAR into their sustainability programs," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. "Corning`s role in energy management is helping reduce our nation`s greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change and preserve a healthy planet for future generations."

Corning was recognized for the rapid maturation of its energy management, environmental performance, and greenhouse gas emission-control efforts. Corning is a global company with U.S. operations consisting of nearly 50 facilities in 16 states and the District of Columbia.

Corning is one of a select few manufacturers to be designated an ENERGY STAR Partner. Corning, along with other ENERGY STAR Partners, will be celebrated in Washington, D.C., on April 20.

"We`re honored to be named an Energy Star Partner of the Year for the second consecutive year. We committed ourselves to ongoing improvements, and this award demonstrates that we are making terrific progress in our energy journey," said Wendell P. Weeks, Corning`s chairman and chief executive officer. "This is also a great example of how we can do well by doing good. Responsible energy management helps us maintain the trust of our stakeholders, control costs, and compete more effectively in a global economy. In other words, we are investing in Corning`s future as well as the health of our planet."

Corning`s energy policies are developed and implemented by its Global Energy Management program. Since its launch in 2006, GEM`s management practices have saved Corning more than $390 million in cumulative energy costs.

"This recognition as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year would not be possible without the support this program has received from our leadership and the dedication of our team members and plant managers,`` said Patrick Jackson, Corning`s GEM director. "This clearly shows how Corning has bought into the idea that effective management of energy makes good business sense and helps protect the environment."

Corning began its GEM program at a time when the benefits of energy management were a fairly new concept for many large businesses. A $300,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority during former Gov. George Pataki`s administration helped Corning with start-up costs.

"Having a large industrial energy user like Corning make such a commitment and agree to partner with NYSERDA to promote and share their results validated NYSERDA`s efforts that improving the way a corporation uses energy translates into increased productivity, cost savings and significant environmental benefits, benefits that accrue to the bottom line. I congratulate Corning as an ENERY STAR Partner of the Year for the second year in a row and for a commitment made a decade ago that is still paying dividends today," said Peter R. Smith, former president and CEO of NYSERDA.

Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped prevent a total of more than 2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2013 alone, ENERGY STAR and its partners provided more than $11 billion in societal benefits due to reducing damages from climate change.

ENERGY STAR has 16,000 partners working to protect the environment through greater energy efficiency, including manufacturers, retailers, public schools, hospitals, real estate companies, and home builders.
