Quanex Building Products’ Tracy Rogers, director of industry relations & advanced technology, will present at the biennial Glass Performance Days Conference June 24–26 in Tampere, Finland. As a glass and sustainability speaker at the conference, Rogers will be presenting the benefits of interior installed high-performance insulating glass (IG) for commercial retrofit applications, based on information gathered through a collaborative research effort between Quanex and JE Berkowitz, LP. “Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is becoming a top priority for building owners, design professionals and cities across the country,” Rogers said. “The industry must look at every aspect of the structure, and high-performing IG is a small component that can make a big impact on a building’s sustainability.” According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings account for roughly 40 percent of all energy consumption in the United States. Most energy retrofits for commercial buildings focus on installing high-efficiency equipment such as boilers, motors and lighting. While this approach can help decrease energy consumption, efficiency gains from equipment can be offset by other building materials, such as inefficient windows. Inefficient windows can account for 25 percent of a typical building’s heating load in cold climates and 50 percent of the cooling load in warm climates, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “Because equipment is sized to service a specific building’s needs, improving a building’s envelope should be addressed first, so that smaller equipment can be specified, saving on the upfront and ongoing costs,” Rogers said. “Using existing commercial glazing systems, there are a variety of options that exist for improving the energy performance of your windows.” Rogers will explore this topic more during his Glass Performance Days presentation, comparing the performance benefits, cost implications and occupancy comfort factors for different glazing systems, with a focus on the advantages of an interior installed low-e retrofit IG unit. Rogers will also be chairing the IGU & Window Technology educational session at the conference where he and others will discuss the latest innovations in IG and window technology.
