According to experts, glass industry is a resource-dependent industry with high energy consumption. With the rapid development of China’s economy, the average annual output of glass industry increases by 15%. By 2009, the annual production of flat glass was as many as 582 million weight boxes.

According to the statistics, more than 210 production lines for float glass were constructed and put into operation. Most of production lines chose heavy oil, natural gas, gas and electric power as their resources. In general, the proportion of energy costs in total production cost was between 40% and 45%. More than 30% of thermal energy that transformed into exhaust fames was discharged.

Technicians found that during the process of glass manufacturing, there was a great deal of waste heat. Through power stations, waste heat could be transformed into thermal energy and then clean electricity. As a result, total utilization of fuel was increased by between 20% and 25%. At the same time, equipments of waste heat power generation could reduce some dust. Some influential waste heat projects for generating electric power are conducted by (Chengdu) CSG Holding Co., Ltd, China Triumph International Engineering Co., Ltd. (CTIEC) and Qinhuangdao Glass Industry Research & Design Institute, and the like.

The technology of waste heat for generating electric power has a bright future but we still have a long way to go.
