Pilkington North America has announced that it will lay off 51 employees from its automotive glass plant in Shelbyville, Ind., at the end of March, according to company spokesperson Roberta Steedman.
"Our plants in North America continue to adjust their production schedules to customer orders," Steedman told glassBYTEs.com™/AGRR magazine. She attributes the layoffs to "automotive volume reductions."
By the end of March, the Shelbyville plant will have approximately 200 employees.
"This is down approximately 50 percent from a year ago," Steedman added. "Some of the reduction in workforce over this period was due to attrition (i.e., not replacing workers who retired or left their jobs)."
Steedman says no further layoffs are planned at this time.
