Roofglaze brings natural light to London Underground Roofglaze Limited has installed two 140m long dual pitch rooflights at the Neasden Rail Depot in London as part of a major refurbishment project by BAM Nuttall. Located in North West London, the Neasden Depot is the largest facility on the London Underground network and is where all the Metropolitan stock is serviced, cleaned, inspected, repaired and stored. In addition, a third of the Jubilee Line fleet is also stabled there. Following the recent introduction of a new generation of trains, the facilities at the depot required significant improvement, including the construction of a new train maintenance shed, for which Roofglaze was contracted to supply the rooflight. With each pitched section measuring 140m long x 4m span, the rooflight provides natural light to the full length of the shed, as well as automatic smoke ventilation via forty louvre ventilation units. The Rooflight is constructed using the Patented Twinfix Multi-Link Panel glazing system, glazed with 25mm multiwall polycarbonate sheet. The aluminium framework is polyester powder coated to the specified grey RAL 7012. The rooflight installation needed to be undertaken quickly, with minimal disruption to other work at the site and with limited access in some areas. Each rooflight was installed in just seven days and the project was completed within the required time schedule. “The Twinfix panels, provided exactly what the client required: quick installation, without compromising the functionality or durability of the end result”, said Paul Stewart, Contracts Manager at Roofglaze. He continued: “We were also complimented by the client for our professionalism and efficiency whilst on-site. We always aim to fit in and work closely with main contractors and roofing contractors, so this comment was appreciated”. Another advantage of the Twinfix system is its Class B Non-fragile classification – an important consideration at a site where regular roof access may be required for maintenance. Roofglaze offers a complete range of rooflight systems, from thermoplastic modular domes and pyramids to bespoke structural glass skylights.
