China Just Broke Its Own Record for the Longest Glass Bridge in the World

China revealed its newest and longest glass bottom bridge over the weekend.

On December 23, more than 3,000 people showed up to walk across the new world’s longest glass bridge in Shijiazhuang in Northern China.

The bridge is 1,600 feet long and only 6.5 feet wide. It hangs between two cliffs more than 700 feet above the valley floor in the Hongyagu Scenic Area in Pingshan county.

Although the bridge is capable of holding up to 3,000 people at a time, security precautions limit that number to 600 people at a time.

If any daredevils chicken out halfway through the bridge, there are guards who will escort any frightened walkers off the bridge. Although this may seem an unnecessary precaution, the glass bridge was designed to swing as people walk across it, an unnerving sensation for those in the middle.

However, staff ensure that the bridge is completely safe, with engineers performing safety checks every day.

According to the China Daily, the bridge took 18 months to build and can withstand the “strongest winds” or a magnitude six earthquake. The bridge is composed of 1,077 panes of glass that are 4 centimeters — or about an inch and a half — thick.

Over the past few years, Chinese glass bridges keep debuting at longer and more impressive rates. The previous record was held by a glass bridge in Tianmenshan National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie that stretched 1,410 feet. There was another glass bridge that broke height records that opened last year. But it made international headlines when it temporarily closed two weeks after opening when visitors spotted a crack in the glass.

However, the scariest of all is probably a glass bridge with digital tiles that look like they’re cracking as pedestrians walk across.
