A state-owned business in China has announced plans to invest 2.7 billion yuan (US$395.1 million) to build an LCD glass substrate plant in the western city of Chengdu.
The China National Building Material Group (CNBM), which signed an agreement with the Chegndu city government for the project on March 30, plans to install three production lines at the fab. Construction of the first line is scheduled to start in July this year, with production ramp-up expected in 2010, the company said.
The company noted that glass substrate supply has been dominated by a few players from the US, Korea and Japan, but the CNBM project is in line with a goal to build Chengdu, Sichuan province into a hub of the country's display industry with a complete supply chain of upstream and downstream players.
It said two major panel makers in China, BOE Technology and Tianma Microelectronics, are both building 4.5G LCD fabs in Chengdu.
