Jamshedpur, India. Famous Metal India Private Ltd. (Famous) is a supplier to India’s automotive Tata Motors Ltd. The company manufactures individual components for different models of heavy goods vehicle. Some of the machines it was using had grown seriously outdated and were unable to provide cloud capability. Having taken the decision to modernize its machine fleet, Famous opted to use control technology and the “Manage MyMachines” MindApp from Siemens. The machine upgrade and the ability to link to the open IoT (Internet of Things) have meant that Famous now benefits from improved productivity, availability and transparency, as well as reduced costs and downtimes.
The 20 machines in use at the Famous factory include six with CNC (Computerized Numerical Control), three of which were equipped with Sinumerik 810D or 802D machine tool controls prior to the upgrade. To prepare not only the machines but the whole production process for digitalization, the first step was to replace the obsolete CNCs by new Sinumerik 828D controls. Step two was to link the machine tools to MindSphere using the “Manage MyMachines” MindApp.
Keeping a close eye on machine status
“Manage MyMachines” affords the machine operators at Famous a rapid, cloud-based overview of the most important data and operating statuses relating to each of the production machines. The MindApp enables the acquisition, analysis and visualization of relevant machine data, offering the user optimum transparency over the current machine status and its predicted condition over time. By digitalizing its production in this way, Famous has benefited from a tangible increase in productivity and plant availability. The company has also been able to reduce its production costs and machine downtimes as well as simplifying maintenance operations.
