All day, people have been driving up to Bayfront Glass at 1310 East Avenue. Every Friday, the company invites people to drop off their glass because some municipalities, including Erie,
no longer accept it at curbside.
"We had people show up a little bit early. We started at 10. We had people at 9:45. We imagine it will even go late again tonight,” said John Nowakowski, Co-Owner.
Bayfront Glass opened in June 2019 and has been growing ever since. It has big plans for 2020. The company plans to install large bins at two locations this month so people can drop off their glass anytime in the day or night.
"The big thing with the glass drop-off stations is when you come to drop-off your glass, you're going to have to color sort. So we're going to have three different bins that are marked, clear, green, and brown glass,” said Nick Bruno, Co-Owner.
Also in 2020, Bayfront Glass is planning to begin curbside pick-up for glass. It will be a welcome service to many people who miss that convenience.
"What that would entail then is a monthly service fee with a once a month collection. We're talking about 8 dollars a month,” says Bruno.
People interested in the curbside collection are asked to log onto the company’s web site, bayfrontglass.com., and click “Residential.”
The company is personally asking restaurants and bars to sign up for a commercial collection service.
Bayfront Glass crushes the glass on site. It currently ships the crushed glass to a company near Pittsburgh to remove the labels and bottle caps that remain attached. Soon, the company plans to have the equipment to do that job at its East Avenue location.
