The value of nonresidential architectural glass and glazing activity was slightly down again in June, according to glass industry research firm Key Media & Research (KMR). Glass-related nonresidential construction spending decreased 1.2% from June 2019 and 0.6% from May 2020, at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate.
KMR’s glass and glazing activity figures are developed from the U.S. Census Bureau’s monthly construction spending report, with weighting and models applied to industry-relevant subsectors.
Despite the more-than-1% dip in architectural glass work, overall nonresidential construction actually increased 0.4% from June 2019 to June 2020.
Commercial
In June, commercial glass and glazing activity declined 2.7% from the same time a year ago, driven by a 14.6% decrease in lodging construction and a less extreme drop (-2.2%) in office work. On a month-over-month basis, glass-related commercial construction spending edged down 0.2%.
Institutional
Glass and glazing construction activity on institutional buildings saw a slight 0.6% uptick from June 2019 to June 2020, with the important healthcare segment increasing 1.7% and the educational sector falling 0.5%. From May 2020 to June 2020, institutional work declined 1%.
