Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing generally increased from August 2020 to September 2020, and those gains carried over on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The September PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to slide, dropping another .1% from the previous month but clocked a .6% increase compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”
The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification dropped yet another 0.4% from August 2020, and that takes the year-over-year comparison basis down 1.2%. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
The PPI for metal windows has remained the same for four straight months, but increased 2.8% compared to the September 2019 report. Prices for metal doors and frames increased by .1% from August to September, improving 1.3% since last year. Prices for wood window units remained the same in September—the fifth straight month without significant change—but also maintains a steady increase of 3.2% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications dropped slightly in September 2020, down .1%, but that didn’t seem to affect the year-over-year comparison, which clocked in at 1.2% over September 2019 pricing.
The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials rose by 1.1% over August 2020, but saw an overall drop of 3.6% compared to September 2019. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose slightly, up .6% from August 2020, as well as being up by 0.1% over last year.
The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, fell -0.1% from August to September, but clocked a 1.9% increase from August 2019.
