CES 2022 Features Smart Glass for Added Security

CES 2022 took place last week in Las Vegas, and while reports show lower attendance than previous years due to COVID-19, a few players in the glazing industry still came armed with their latest innovations. The annual event is one that unveils the newest consumer electronic technology.

Advanced glass took center stage with Halio Inc., which promoted its AI-controlled smart glass. The company is partnering with Viracon and Marvin to incorporate the technology into both commercial and residential applications.

The company exhibited in the “Green Avenue” section of CES 2022, and says its smart glass is the first to address critical design and performance issues, including clear and tint color, responsiveness and speed, tint uniformity and cloud-based AI for autonomous operation. Halio’s AI determines the maximum amount of daylight that can enter the building in real-time to deliver up to 20% energy savings and minimizing glare management that leads to occupant wellness, according to the company.

Ring also made news on the trade show floor, as the company unveiled a new Alarm Glass Break Sensor. Using AI technology, the sensor detects the sound of glass breaking up to 25 feet. Homeowners can get mobile alerts when the sensor detects the sound of glass shattering in the home, or set the sensor to sound the Ring Alarm siren automatically when armed in Home or Away mode.

Also on the home automation and security side, Schlage introduced its Encode Plus™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt. The product allows consumers to lock and unlock their doors easily using their Apple Watch®, iPhone® or Schlage’s HomeKit®.

Another significant introduction came from Masonite, which formed a few partnerships to unveil M-Pwr™ Smart Doors, which bring power, lights and a video doorbell, into an integrated system. The door includes emergency battery backup, motion-sensing LED welcome lighting, a Ring video doorbell and a Yale smart lock.

The product employs patent-pending, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certified technology to connect residential exterior doors to a home’s electrical system and wireless internet network. To ensure that the doors are “always on” in the event of a power outage, an emergency backup battery can sustain system power up to 24 hours when fully charged. The smartphone app enables homeowners to remotely program and control motion-activated LED welcome lighting as well as confirm whether the door is open or closed at any time, according to the company.
