US Producer Prices Fall in July, First Drop in Months

The seasonally unadjusted prices for materials used in glass and glazing manufacturing were positive in July compared to June 2022, and in year-over-year price changes, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category is up 0.1% from June to July and up 6.9% year-to-year. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.

The July index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification remains down 0.2% from June to July, but up 11.8% year-to-year. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

Prices for fabricated structural metal products were up from last month’s PPI report. That index, in the commodity grouping, is up 21.3% from a year ago and down 0.8% from last month. The index for ornamental and architectural metal product manufacturing, in the industry category, increased 0.9% from June and 30.9% year-to-year.

The PPI for metal windows increased 0.3% in July and climbed 30.7% compared to the July 2021 report. The price for metal doors and frames is also up, 0.3% from June and 30.4% for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, including that used in glass and glazing, also increased from the June report with a 3.4% increase and rising 12.9% over July 2021.
