The seasonally unadjusted prices for materials used in glass and glazing manufacturing remained steady in October. Despite some indexes reporting marginal declines, year-over-year prices remain high, reports the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in its latest Producer Price Index (PPI).
In October, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category saw an increase of 1.4% from September to October. Year-to-year, flat glass is up 10.0%. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.
The October index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification increased by 1.6% from September to October. Year-to-year, flat glass manufacturing’s PPI slipped some in October, falling from 20.3% in September to 19.9%. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
Prices for fabricated structural metal products dropped by -0.1%. The index, however, continues to show improvement over 2021 numbers with a year-to-year 11.0% increase. The index for ornamental and architectural metalwork reported no movement from September to October. Year-to-year, ornamental and architectural metalwork’s PPI remains up 15.3%.
The PPI for metal windows increased by 1.4% from September to October. This follows a slight decrease in September. The PPI for metal windows remains high year-to-year, sitting at 28.6%. The price for metal doors and frames increased by 0.6%. Year-to-year, the metal doors and frames’ PPI sits at 20.7%
The cost of builders’ hardware, including materials used in glass and glazing, dropped by -0.6%. Year-to-year, the cost of builders’ hardware PPI sits at 7.5%.
