U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has published guidance on the new requirements regarding tariffs on Russian aluminum. The report details how the CBP will monitor countries that continue to import Russian aluminum that is converted to extrusions.
The White House announced a 200% tariff in late February 2023 on all imports of Russian-made aluminum. Presidential Proclamation 10522 on Adjusting Imports of Aluminum into the United States requires that “importers shall provide to CBP information necessary to identify the countries where the primary aluminum used in the manufacture of aluminum articles imports.”
According to CBP, importers of aluminum articles and aluminum derivative articles from all countries of origin need to report the following:
Primary country of smelt;
Secondary country of smelt; and
Country of cast.
The products covered include aluminum articles, such as unwrought aluminum, bars, rods, wire and profiles, plates, sheets, strip and foil, tubes, pipes and tube or pipe fittings, and casting and forging or alumni. Also included are aluminum derivatives, such as stranded wire, cables, plaited bands, and the like, including slings and similar articles of aluminum, among others.
Canada Bans Russian Aluminum, Steel Imports
Canada banned the import of all Russian aluminum and steel products.
“Ukraine can and must win this war,” says Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister and finance minister. “We continue to do everything we can to cut off or limit the revenue used to fund Putin’s illegal and barbaric invasion of Ukraine.”
