KUCHING, Nov 20:The Sarawak government is in discussion with two international companies to establish state-of-the-art solar glass and cement manufacturing plants, with an expected investment of RM8.22 billion and the creation of 5,700 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
According to Deputy Premier and Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II (MUDeNR) Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the State government has identified the mining sector as a key driver for economic transformation under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
"Efforts are being undertaken to transform this sector, encompassing upstream and downstream industries," said Awang Tengah during his ministerial winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Earlier in June 2024, a technical study trip to Canada, one of the world's leading mining nations was conducted to enhance Sarawak's capabilities in mining and resource management.
The trip's objectives were to explore several critical aspects, including mining ecosystem development, legal frameworks, industry management, the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and community engagement.
"Field studies were also made to the mining areas as well as former mining areas and quarries.
“We (Sarawak) have learned how mining operations can be carried out without affecting a large part of the surrounding environment.
"Similarly, (we also learned) how a former quarry area can be developed into one of the world's most famous parks that can attract more than 1 million visitors and generate a yearly income of more than RM140 million," he said.- DayakDaily
